11 - Bulletproof Heart

This was not the time to mention it, so she didn’t. But it figured to Maya that when she finally heard from one of her siblings, Roan would wind up in the hospital.

Maya had been careful. She still used that VPN Roan had installed on her computer, and she checked it to make sure it was still registering her as being from Boston. The thing with the VPN was it would allow her to pick a place to be from. So she could switch it to France, or Australia, or Chile if she wanted, but she figured that would give the game away. Boston was plausible, as it was relatively close to the Canadian border—well, kind of—yet was still a distance enough away that going there to look for her would be out of the question.

Maya had given up emailing her siblings—ex-siblings—after the first month. Not all of them, just Ava and Jordan, the two she generally got along with and who might still be willing to talk to her. After thirty odd days of silence, she figured she wasn’t going to hear from them again. Just like her parents, they’d abandoned her.

Which was why the email from Ava was such a surprise. It wasn’t much. “Hi. You have a computer where you are? Where are you? Mom and Dad say they don’t know.” Maya felt a “and they don’t care” was probably the proper end to that sentence, but maybe she was being bitter.

But fuck that noise. Didn’t she deserve to be bitter? They kicked her out over a stupid little growl—and it was nothing really, not like the ones Roan could make—which was absolutely a case of the punishment being far worse than the crime.

There was so much she wanted to tell Ava, and couldn’t, not if she didn’t want them to all get caught. But she felt like a totally different person than what she had been several months ago.

She and Ava, they always went along with the God shit of their parents, because it was expected, but they didn’t believe like the rest of the family. Still, it was weird when Roan admitted he was an atheist and Dylan admitted he was a Buddhist—who knew Satanists!—because she really didn’t know what she’d be in for. She was actually a little scared the first week here, expecting the shoe to drop and all her parents’—ex-parents’—preaching about godless pedophiles and whatnot would come true. Which was fucking ridiculous in retrospect.

Non-christian people and gays were just ... people. There were no wild sex parties—well, that she knew of—no sacrifices to pagan gods, no burning churches to the ground. She’d gone to the Buddhist temple with Dylan, who informed her Buddhists didn’t believe in “converting” anyone, and he never tried. But to see so many actual Asian people in one place! It was the first time she’d encountered that in ages. And it was peaceful there, kind of soothing. She didn’t hate it. Honestly, she kind of liked it.
