11 - Bulletproof Heart
This was not the time to mention it, so she didnât. But it figured to Maya that when she finally heard from one of her siblings, Roan would wind up in the hospital.
Maya had been careful. She still used that VPN Roan had installed on her computer, and she checked it to make sure it was still registering her as being from Boston. The thing with the VPN was it would allow her to pick a place to be from. So she could switch it to France, or Australia, or Chile if she wanted, but she figured that would give the game away. Boston was plausible, as it was relatively close to the Canadian borderâwell, kind ofâyet was still a distance enough away that going there to look for her would be out of the question.
Maya had given up emailing her siblingsâex-siblingsâafter the first month. Not all of them, just Ava and Jordan, the two she generally got along with and who might still be willing to talk to her. After thirty odd days of silence, she figured she wasnât going to hear from them again. Just like her parents, theyâd abandoned her.
Which was why the email from Ava was such a surprise. It wasnât much. âHi. You have a computer where you are? Where are you? Mom and Dad say they donât know.â Maya felt a âand they donât careâ was probably the proper end to that sentence, but maybe she was being bitter.
But fuck that noise. Didnât she deserve to be bitter? They kicked her out over a stupid little growlâand it was nothing really, not like the ones Roan could makeâwhich was absolutely a case of the punishment being far worse than the crime.
There was so much she wanted to tell Ava, and couldnât, not if she didnât want them to all get caught. But she felt like a totally different person than what she had been several months ago.
She and Ava, they always went along with the God shit of their parents, because it was expected, but they didnât believe like the rest of the family. Still, it was weird when Roan admitted he was an atheist and Dylan admitted he was a Buddhistâwho knew Satanists!âbecause she really didnât know what sheâd be in for. She was actually a little scared the first week here, expecting the shoe to drop and all her parentsââex-parentsââpreaching about godless pedophiles and whatnot would come true. Which was fucking ridiculous in retrospect.
Non-christian people and gays were just ... people. There were no wild sex partiesâwell, that she knew ofâno sacrifices to pagan gods, no burning churches to the ground. Sheâd gone to the Buddhist temple with Dylan, who informed her Buddhists didnât believe in âconvertingâ anyone, and he never tried. But to see so many actual Asian people in one place! It was the first time sheâd encountered that in ages. And it was peaceful there, kind of soothing. She didnât hate it. Honestly, she kind of liked it.
